Velux Conversions

Hip to Gable Extensions

Many detached and semi-detached properties in London have a hipped roof. This is when a sloping roof has additional slopes to both front and back. This can often mean that your existing loft space is limited. 

A hip to gable loft conversion is a great way to extend the living space in your home by replacing the sloping roof with a vertical wall known as a gable end. This type of loft conversion is ideal for most properties but is not available on mid terraced homes as they do not have a hip end roof.

Mansard Loft Conversion

What About the Design and Planning Process?

Many loft conversions do not need planning permission as they can be carried out using Permitted Development. Our professional team of architects take care of all the measurements before drawing up the plans for your conversion. Once the plans have been drawn up, they will be sent to you for approval.

Once you are happy with the design of your loft conversion, the completed plans will be submitted to the local council on your behalf. As soon as the plans have been signed off, approved and permission granted, The London Loft Converters will begin the construction of your loft conversion.

Things to Consider About a Loft Conversion

Is My Loft a Useable Space?

As a general guideline, we will need 2.3m of head height for the loft conversion to be possible. We do have options available to us to raise the height in some cases but a standard 2.3m or more is perfect for converting a loft in the most cost effective way. 

Have a look at the angle of your roof, the higher the pitch angle the higher your central head height is going to be. There needs to be adequate space below the ridge of the roof and also at least 2.1m of space above the location of the intended stair. Measure the height, full width and length of the space so that we can determine the rough size of the loft space available.

Plumbing, Boilers and Water Tanks in Loft

If you have a boiler or water tank currently in your loft space then it isn’t really a problem, we can usually add to the existing system. We can also advise you on the options available which might include changing your boiler to a combi boiler or changing your existing hot water tank to a megaflow system. 

We also may need to add a pressurised water system if you are looking to have a bathroom installed in your loft.

Natural Light – Velux and Windows

It’s always preferential to have plenty of natural light in any room and for this reason we recommend you consider having a window at the front and back of the room. Not only does this lead to a good air flow throughout the room, it helps to spread an even natural light throughout the space.

How Long is it Going to Take?

The loft conversion time will obviously depend upon the amount of work required. Whether you choose a Velux conversion, a dormer conversion, a hip to gable conversion or a Mansard conversion, your design will still be bespoke to your individual property. Every property is different and some can be more of a challenge then others. As a rough guide, a loft conversion should take between four and five weeks. The main things that you will need to consider in terms of how long a project will take are the three phases.

The Three Phases: Design, Planning and Building

There are three phases that need to be carried out to ensure that a project runs to plan, on time and looks exactly like the conversion you had envisaged. If any one of these phases is disrupted for any reason, then the conversion project may take much longer than first anticipated.

Design: If the design is going to alter the structure of your property then we will require an architect to produce a drawing of the exterior of your home. This is to not only give you an understanding of how your conversion will affect the outside of your home but it will also be required for any planning permission that is applied for.

Planning: This is the planning permission you will need to get from the local authority. It may also include the purchasing of any materials we might need to complete your loft conversion.

Building: As soon as the conversion project has been approved by the local authorities and all of the necessary products and materials have arrived, The London Loft Converters can begin your build. Construction starts with the roof and any exterior works required before the team move indoors to complete electrics, plumbing and plastering work. The build time also depends on the type of loft conversion you are having. For instance, a Velux or dormer conversion tend to be quicker than a hip to gable or Mansard conversion.
